ZEBRA HELICONIAN - Heliconius charithonia vasquezae LIFE CYCLE STUDY

Return to Life Cycle Studies of Lower Rio Grande Valley Butterflies

On 9/9/2007, I observed a Zebra Longwing - Heliconius charithonia vasquezae ovipositing on Corky Stem Passionflower - Passiflora suberosa.  I collected the egg for rearing.  25 days later on 10/4/2007, the butterfly emerged and was released.

Corky Stem Passionflower - Passiflora suberosa, fairly common in the Rio Grande Valley, is the specific host plant for the Zebra Longwing, although four other Passionflower species often occur together in the LRGV.

Day-1 (9/9/2007) egg was laid at 1400hrs., and collected for rearing.

Day-3 (9/12/2007) from when the egg was laid. Day-1 (9/12/2007) as a caterpillar, which eclosed at 2000hrs.  The caterpillar is ~2.5mm long.

Day-9 (9/18/2007) from when the egg was laid, Day-6 as a caterpillar.  Caterpillar is 12mm long.

Day-15 (9/24/2007) from when the egg was laid, Day-12 as a caterpillar.  The caterpillar is 29mm long.

Day-17 (9/26/2007) from when the egg was laid, Day-14 as a caterpillar.  The caterpillar is 31mm long.  At 1530hrs., the body color has turned a pinkish tinge, and the spots are more brown.  The caterpillar has been doing a lot of wandering around, looking for a place to make a "J"

Day-17 (9/26/2007) from when the egg was laid, Day-14 as a caterpillar.  The caterpillar is 31mm long.  At 1930hrs., the caterpillar started making a "J".

Day-18 (9/27/2007) from when the egg was laid, Day-1 as a chrysalis.  The chrysalis was formed between 0600hrs and 0830hrs.

Day-25 (10/4/2007 at 1400hrs) the Zebra Longwing -Heliconius charithonia vasquezae was released on the same Corky Stem Passionflower - Passiflora suberosa where the egg was laid.
