Tube Tongue - Siphonoglossa pilosella is common
throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley and is the host plant for the Vesta Crescent - Phyciodes graphica vesta.
Day-1 (8-12-08) a Vesta Crescent - Phyciodes graphica vesta
was observed ovipositing eggs on Tube Tongue - Siphonoglossa pilosella, and the eggs were collected
for rearing.
Day-1 (8/12/08) 9 eggs were collected.
Day-4 (8/16/08) from when the eggs were laid (the dark spots in the eggs
are the caterpillars' heads).
Day-5 (8/17/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-1 beginning eclosing.
Caterpillars are 1 mm long.
Day-8 (8/20/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-3 from eclosing.
The caterpillars are 2mm long. Seven caterpillars were discarded onto Tube Tongue.
Day-13 (8/25/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-8 from eclosing.
The caterpillar is 5mm long. The second caterpillar was discarded onto Tube Tongue.
Day-15 (8/27/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-10 from eclosing.
The caterpillar is 8mm long.
Day-20 (9/1/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-15 from eclosing.
The caterpillar is 13mm long.
Day-23 (9/4/08 at 0645hrs) from when the eggs were laid, Day-18 from
eclosing, the caterpillar formed a "J".
Day-23 (9/4/08 at 1247hrs) from when the eggs were laid, Day-18 from
eclosing, Day-1 as a chrysalis, which is 10mm long.
Day-27 (9/8/08) from when the eggs were laid, Day-22 from eclosing, Day-5
as a chrysalis.
Day-29 (9/10/08 at 0900hrs) from when the eggs were laid, Day-24 from
eclosing, Day-7 as a chrysalis, and the butterfly emerges.
Day-29 (9/10/08) and the butterfly was released.
