Dicliptera - Dicliptera vahliana is the host plant
for Pale-banded Crescent - Anthanassa tulcis, and is an uncommon plant throughout the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
It is very evasive and is abundant at all formal butterfly gardens in the LRGV.
Day-1 (10/10/2007) a Pale-banded Crescent - Anthanassa tulcis ovipositing
her eggs on the underside of a Dicliptera - Dicliptera vahliana leaf, taking ~20mins to oviposit ~90 eggs.
Day-1 (10/10/2007) the eggs were collected for rearing.
Day-13 (10/23/2007) from when the eggs were laid, Day-8 from eclosing
(10/15/2005). The caterpillar is 5mm long. The remaining caterpillars were discarded back on Dicliptera.
Day-16 (10/26/2007) from when the eggs were laid, Day-11 from eclosing.
The caterpillar is 18mm long.
Day-18 (10/28/2008 at 1100hrs) from when the eggs were laid, Day-13 from
eclosing, and the caterpillar made a "J".
Day-18 (10/28/2008 at 1500hrs) from when the eggs were laid, Day-13 from
eclosing, and the caterpillar made a chrysalis. The chrysalis is 11mm long.
Day-22 (11/1/2008) from when the eggs were laid, Day-17 from eclosing,
Day-4 as a chrysalis.
Day-24 (11/3/01) from when the eggs were laid, Day-19 from eclosing,
Day-6 as a chrysalis, and the Pale-banded Crescent - Anthanassa tulcis emerged and was released.
